poiká café:

a good anomaly at the centre of sultanahmet

words & photos by irem

This cute and cosy cafe is located in the middle of Sultanahmet, both conveniently yet unexpectedly. Its minimalistic look is tucked away into a corner surrounded with kilim covered tables and chairs which are the touristiest and natural scene in this part of the city and it is perfectly reasonable. But if you are looking for a good coffee, vegan and vegetarian options there aren’t many places to go, hence Poiká serves as a calm highland in this Turkish tea jungle.

As you got off the tram at the Sultanahmet stop, you’ll see a small alleyway and a usual tea-house with kilim-patterned tablecloths, overcome the touristic urge and choose the café with the green framed large windows: that’s Poiká.

The vibe is Scandinavian minimalism met European hipsterism highlighted with cool murals, warm lighting and very nice staff. As for the menu, the coffee is really good although ours came too early got cold while I and my friend were waiting for breakfast to arrive, breakfast plates were delicious. We ordered the bigger breakfast plate, an omelette with cheese and herbs, and a croissant to try. Breakfast plate comes with regular Turkish tea and a pide (a type of bread) bowl and croissant with jam. I don’t recommend the latter as it was quite stale. Overall it was a nice meal and a lovely place. There are cakes and sweets, sandwiches, vegan and vegetarian bowls, an herbal tea selection on the menu as well.

Poiká doesn’t only serve good coffee and all-day nice breakfast spreads, they also organize regular book club meetings.
