Barış Manço can be described as the combination of Rock 'n Roll and Anatolia. He was such a figure in our life when he died almost everyone felt the sadness of realizing that there will be no one like him in the industry. So when Travis' Fran Healy started singing "Dağlar Dağlar", which was also one of his favourite songs to sing, everyone went insane with goosebumps.
Performed their second album "The Man Who" released in 1999 with other major hits on June 8 as part of Garanti Jazz Green Concerts. Both the 1999 album and Barış Manço was a great pick for the concerts. We, the Xennials, basically grew up watching the latter on TV and enjoy our teens while listening to Travis.
Had Fran sung a piece from Erkin Koray, would it make the same effect on the audience? Sure he also has a niche fan-base across the country, however, the thing about Barış Manço is that he was unconditionally loved by everyone and every generation thanks to his unapologetically genuine attitude towards life.
The simultaneous rise of the phones to record this moment in the video below speaks for itself.
The rumour has it:
Barış Manço fell for a Belgian girl called Marie Claude at the beginning of his music career. After 6 whole years, they got married. Barış was a famous rock singer/songwriter now. A couple of months later -some say 40 days and others say 6 months later-, the Turkish media was shocked by the news of Barış and Marie getting divorced. Soon after, Marie was seen with another rock singer "Fikret Kızılok". The rumour part is that Marie cheated on Barış with Fikret. As a result, Barış Manço wrote and composed the song "Dağlar Dağlar" out of sadness. Whatever the reason for it, it had become his favourite song to sing. As Fran said, "You don't hear songs like that anymore."
